Mission

Statement of Philosophy

Each band program must be judged in terms of the manner and degree to which it serves the students of its particular school and community. The staff of the band department strives to provide a program that complements the academic program while further developing the cultural, aesthetic and practical values of its students.

The band program, to be appropriate for the majority of Homewood High School students, must:

1. Provide quality instruction
2. Have a high level of cultural involvement in music
3. Be complementary to the academic program

The staff feels that music should be available to every Homewood High School student who chooses to participate, regardless of ability.

Objectives:

1. To provide students with a pleasant, positive experience that increases and adds to their appreciation and enjoyment of music.

2. To increase the music students', and possibly the non-music students', enthusiasm for the school experience, thus improving attendance and motivating the students toward increased academic achievement.

3. To develop in students an enhanced aesthetic sensitivity for music as an art from by disciplined study and application for its various elements, both separately and as they are combined into a coherent musical whole.

4. To provide students with a healthy hobby of avocation which can be useful throughout life.
